EP 50: Celebrating Episode 50 with Oakley Cuevas!
You guys. Welcome to episode fifty of the think happy podcast. Holy Moly, I cannot believe we have been going strong for fifty straight weeks, fifty brand new episodes in a row. It's this feels crazy to me. I mean that's almost a whole year. We're two episodes away from a whole year. So I thought it would be fun just to do a quick little you know, look back on how things were when we first started versus how they are now. So the primary thing that comes to my mind is that this show has grown from just having guests that are in Houston, where I live, two now guests that live across the country and as of episodes forty eight and forty nine, we can officially say that we have had the pleasure of speaking with guests from across the world, which well little the think happy podcast here, just talking to everyone, and it's been so fun.
Back then, I remember, I mean I say back then, it wasn't so long ago, but I do remember how uncertain I felt of myself, just how I wasn't sure really how long I would stick with the show. I had made a goal of committing to at least twenty episodes before I threw in the towel. I was like, okay, Kaitlin, you're gonna do this for twenty episodes. You know you have to give it a real try. And now we have surpassed that goal by thirty episodes and I just I have no plans of stopping. Actually, I've been working on getting the show prepared for a while. I'm away from eternity leave, so, um I'm hoping to only fully take two weeks off from the show for Thanksgiving and Christmas. For the other weeks you'll have a combination of prerecorded episodes some bonus content, I. E. I'm going to release a couple of episodes that have previously only been available to patreon members and then you'll just have one or two rerun episodes, but they're really good. I'm pretty sure the ones that we're rerunning are going to cover tackling the holiday season and then another one is going to be about New Year's resolutions. So very good content for you guys.

Alright, so you probably already know who today's guest is based on. You know the episode title. But let me have just a little bit of fun before I officially reveal who this special person is. So here are a little bit of hints. I guess. He was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, and moved to Houston right before he started middle school. Then after Middle School, in High School in Houston, he attended Texas A and M University, which is where I first met him. He was hands down my best guy friend for most of college and even after we graduated and moved back to Houston. Now fast forward with me, ten years post graduation. He is still one of my absolute best friends and now also my husband. So it is my absolute pleasure to introduce you to the one and only Oakley Cuevas, is welcome to the show, Babe. hello, Hello, you you're our first male guest. How about? How about that pretty exciting stuff. So, you guys, Oakley came with me to record the first episode, so it seemed fitting for him to come celebrate thet with me. And let me tell you, this man is only here because he loves me and supports me a hundred and ten percent. So, with that being said, I'm extremely appreciative and totally pumped up that he is here with us today. So, baby, should we just dive right in?
Sure, let's go. Let's go. Okay, so start by telling everyone just a little bit about yourself. Well, some of this you've already said, but my name is Oakley Cuevas. I was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, in nine I moved to Houston when I was twelve years old in two thousand and two, and I've lived in Houston mostly ever since, except for my years at Texas A and M Yep. I'm a patrol engineer working for a consulting firm here in Houston. I'm married to you. We have a daughter named Ellie, who's awesome and funny. We have and cute and cute, very cute, and we have a dog named guppy and it's also cute. She is very cute, sometimes annoying, but yeah, I think that about covers it. And then we have another one on the way. We do have another baby boy on the way, due in October, and he's going to be a junior. Yes, James Oakley Jr, the request of my wife. Yes, it was my idea. I figured, you know, his mom did such a good job naming him. So Oakley's full name is James Oakley Cuevas, which I love. And you know, why fix what isn't broken, and we're just reusing the name. So that's where James, Baby James, is getting his name from, his good old daddy O, but we'll call him james so there won't be confusion. Yeah, yeah, yeah, okay. So the first question really like before I get to well, actually, let me start by saying we got lots and lots of questions. This is the most questions that I have had submitted for any guest. You should feel honored.
the first one is, you know, just to like prime the pump a little bit for us, and there were multiple requests for us to fill everyone in on what our quote unquote story is, our love story. Babe, he's smiling right now. I think he still loves me. I hope so. You're stuck with me now. So do you want to start or should I start? I can start. You start. So we had pretty similar friend groups in college, so we tended to party quite a bit together. We did that. We got in our fair chair of that. Um, we stayed very close throughout college and after and continued our partying adventures in the bars in Houston. Maybe a Bourbon Street trip somewhere in there. Any New Orleans fans you guys? Oh, I'm sure there's gotta be. There's gotta be. somewhere along the way after college, romantic tensions. I'm not sure if that's the right word, but I think that's an okay word, probably more appropriate. started building probably late. Yeah. So we graduated in well, I took a victory lab. Yeah, you took a victory lab. So, yeah, I guess. Yeah, it sounds about right. I remember Halloween, of definitely there were there was some of that tension. Yeah, yeah, so then we began this on and off thing which that ran its course and eventually led to me telling you sometime and that it was time to end that on and off thing that we had going and make it official. Yea, yeah, you were. You were definitely somewhat hesitant when I approached you with that. I think, well, it's because you didn't ask me to date you. You told me that it was time that we started dating. Well, and I don't like being told what to do. I definitely had reached a point where the friendship had to go one way or the other. Enough of the back and forth. The friend zone thing wasn't going to work for me. Yeah, yeah, because I think that the day you told me that I had gotten it was it was two days after my birthday.
Okay, this is actually a funny story, and we had had my birthday dinner the night before and I thought that you were going to pay for my birthday dinner with our big group of friends, and you didn't, and so then I then, I got then I got up to say he didn't buy my birthday dinner and I think the whole rest of the night I was mad at yeah, you were, but obviously I wasn't too worried about it, because the next day, when I told you, I think it's time we started dating. Yeah, and so my first response was no, I think I think I said no, what if, what if I get like annoyed with you or something like that and then you're rebuttaled to that was. Well, I actually think you'll it less annoyed with me compared to what we're doing right now, I'm pretty sure. Well, either way, you were definitely hesitant and you I had to kind of talk you into it. I think you were falling into that trap of you didn't want to ruin the friendship. I was no, I actually clearly remember talking to my mom, my friends, my sisters about how I didn't want to ruin our friendship, because I remember that I would say I can't imagine my life without Oakley and if we date and it doesn't work, then I'm going to have to have a life without Oakley. But then we dated and it worked luckily for us and Baby James, Baby James probably mostly lucky for guppy. Yeah, so that's our story. And then so we started dating in May of fourteen, and now this is where we really pressed the fast the like speed up button, because we only dated for six months before we got engaged. Yeah, yeah, something like that. You proposed the weekend of Thanksgiving that same year. And then a year later, almost exactly a year later, like probably fifty one weeks later, not quite the fifty two, we got married. Yeah, we got hitched, we did. And then, yeah, that's our story. Now this year we will have been this November, we will have been married for eight years. Seven years, seven years, for seven years. Okay, guys, that's her story. Excuse me, it just gets me choked up every time. Okay. So, so let's go to some of these other questions.
So, like I said, the thing happy community really delivered a bunch of good questions for us today. so we're not going to lack and things to discuss. Trust me on that. I'll start with some of the you know, just like regular questions, but then we got some really fun questions, Um, and so we're gonna end on those. So I also tried to group the questions into categories. So the first few questions are going to be mostly you know about you. Cool, sure, sweet, let's do it. Okay. So first question, and I think this one is hilarious, what was it like coming from a family of all boys and marrying into a family of all girls. So before you answer, I have to give the listeners some background. Oakley as the youngest of three boys and I am the oldest of three girls. So now you can answer. It was definitely a lot different. I'm sorry to your guests, but there was a lot more fart in and my house growing up. I think I definitely had a little bit of a rougher upbringing than you did in terms of being the youngest of two older brothers. My older brothers were six and eight years older than me. so as a kid I had to deal with things like being woken up by one of my older brothers dressed as Freddy Krueger, claws, sweater, hat, mask, everything pretty terrifying in the middle of the night. I never had to wake up to anything like that. I mean that would terrify me now. And then there was another time of I was given a sippy cup of some kind of juice mixed with a copious amount of hot sauce. You and Peyton were just recently talking about that, right. Yeah, it's so grassed. Wait, but if it was in a Sippy Cup, where you old enough to be like, where you Sippy Cup Age? Or Yeah, I mean I don't know how old that was. It was probably like three years old. Oh my gosh. Yeah, screams. Screams were induced after that. And those are just some of the examples. I'm sure some of your audience with older brothers or maybe sisters can relate to that. Yeah, it wasn't all bad. I had we had a good time growing up, but it was definitely a little bit rougher than, I think you and your sisters said, a little bit different than things were running around at the dunlap household one time.
I mean, so this is maybe kind of not nice ish of me, but Bailey had this doll that she was kind of scared of and one time she was in the shower and there was a shower curtain so like you couldn't see outside the shower, not like a glass door, and so outside of the shower I got um one of our baby doll rocking chairs and put the doll in the rocking chair and like I rocked it so it would keep going back and forth and back and forth, and when Bailey got out of the shower and opened up the curtain, the doll was sitting there looking at her in the rocking chair rocking back and forth. That's a pretty good are you proud of me? It's pretty impressive. I wish I could have seen Bailey. That's pretty funny. So the like. What were your thoughts when you started seeing how a family of all girls interacted versus how a family of all boys? I don't know, it's kind of a tough question. I I personally feel like you're like good at being around girls, if that makes sense. I mean it definitely like, I don't know, I learned to. I think I was definitely played harsher pranks on you early on in our marriage than I do now. Yeah, probably getting whipped with a towel. Oh Gosh, that like snatched thing with the wrist. Oh Gosh, I hate that. I hate that. But now you and my dad just yeah, and and Baby James. Yeah, adding some more testosterone to the mix. Exactly.
Okay. So next question. How do you manage your time with a baby, family, friends and a baby on the way? I wish I know who knew who submitted that. I don't remember definitely not as well as you do, that's for sure. I do my best to keep myself organized, but I definitely lean on you for a lot of that kind of stuff in our lives. Yeah, it helps. It does help me to keep like a visual calendar around that I can write stuff on and so I can like see, because I'm not always good about checking our phone calendar, as you know. Um, but I think you've gotten a lot better. Well, yeah, because I had to. Because, for those of you who don't know, Kaitlin planned stuff out like months or weeks in advance and that'll be no surprise to anyone listening. It'll be Friday and I'm excited and then I look at the calendar and there's two things on Friday, two things on Saturday, some kind of event we're going to on Sunday. But I have worked on that. Yes, you have, but definitely still happens. It does, it does. It was one of my New Year's resolutions. Good M HMM. Yep, it was. So I feel personally, I feel like you manage your time m pretty well and I feel like you don't like I feel like you get less stressed out with the chaos than I do. Well, I think that's just our different personality types. I think I'm more go with the flow than you are. I wish I was called the flow. I can beat, but I'm not very it would be worse, I think, for our family, if that's true. More like me. We're a good combination. Yes, we definitely are.
Okay, so this one is kind of or we kind of segued into this next question. The next one is how does Oakley handle stress? Honestly, I don't really know about this one. I've occasionally vent you are friends, but I don't yeah, I sometimes can get stressed without knowing it. I don't always know that I'm stressed, which is not usually a good thing. So, like I said, sometimes, you know, if there's something going on every week and we're just busy, busy, busy all the time, I'll just like yeah, like hit your boiling point. Yeah, but so, I don't know, it's kind of a yeah, I think that for kind of like what you said venting, so like having an outlet, I think really helps you a lot and I also think that just having time helps you when you get stressed. Yeah, like I gotta have time to do some of the things that I like doing, like if I can, if it's crazy busy all week, but I can go play golf with my friends or something, or I can chill out one night and like watch a movie or something that helps me. Yeah, yeah, I agree.
Okay, what are you most excited about for having a baby boy? Well, I sure do love Ellie and I love I mean she's one and a half years old. So I don't I don't know. You know, the relationship we have is it's pretty there's something about a father son relationship that kind of just makes it special. You know, I have a good relationship with my dad, but I think even then deep down there's like a need to seek approval from him or pride. You know that. I don't know, it's there's something about a father son relationship and so, you know, I don't know, it's just kind of special. Yeah, I can't wait to see you with a boy. I have no idea what to do with a boy. You'll figure it out. No idea. I think boys are easier than girls. Man, maybe emotionally easier than girls. Yeah, see, I'm really excited. I'm really excited to see you have a little boy. Yeah, yeah, especially because so we're like pretty set on being too and done, and so the fact that we're having we already have one girl and we're going to have a boy. Is that feels good? Yeah, yeah, we are very, very blessed. Um. Okay, so the last question in this little category. I can't wait to hear your answer. What made you fall in love with Kaitlin? Well, I have something about contact. sorry. We'll let the start with you know, we were partying a lot, but we always had so much fun together. you and I could talk for hours on end about useless stuff and we'd have a great time doing it. We talked on the phone all the time. Um, from the beginning. We always had such great chemistry together. Yeah, I actually still have some pretty funny voicemails from you from like before we started dating, when I would sing those songs. Yeah, I forgot about this. I think happy community would enjoy those. They would enjoy those. They're probably not very good. I guess, more specific to you, I loved how driven you were in all aspects of your life. I've always admired that about you. I mean just in the seven years that we've been married. The things that you've done and continue to do and the person you've become is nothing short of amazing. Hey, thanks, you're welcome. I love you. I love you too. That's really nice of you. I'm sorry your contacts bothering you. That's annoying. Um, excuse me.
Okay, guys so openly. The next question that we got, I think, was intended to be for both of us. that one is best tips for communicating with your significant other and tough situations. Ah, why don't you start that while I fixed my contact? Okay, that's a good idea. So the very first thing that comes to my mind is just communicatingf that and of itself, you know, because I think sometimes in tough situations, people's default is to to clam up and not communicate. And then I think that not communicating fosters feelings of expecting the other person to know what you're thinking or to know what you're feeling, when in reality no one can. Can know what you're thinking or feeling. but as far as you know, actually doing the communicating. Um, I think that just allowing the other person to be who they are in tough situations. So, like, what I mean by that is like not necessarily taking someone's taking your partners initial reaction to something, as you know what are real reaction is going to be. To it once it's settled down, and I have a hard time doing that sometimes. I don't know. What are your thoughts? I think it's something you definitely learn and develop as you grow kind of as a couple together. I mean, the arguments that you and I had back when we first started dating, or we're first first married, are definitely not the same, you know, as far as what we argue over or just as how we argue. I think definitely, as far this communication goes, being calm and honest it's always a good thing. Definitely calm, no, honesty is a good one also, though, because if you don't feel like you totally get to say what you're feeling, not you, but like whoever, whoever it is, if you don't totally get to feel like, get to to feel like you said everything that you're feeling, then I think that sometimes that can make you feel like more resentful almost after or or like yeah, yeah, yeah, if that makes sense. No, I think that, I think that's definitely true. Yeah, I realized. I'm going to backtrack a second. I feel like I should have told you what made me fall in love with you. Also, like so okally and I have. This isn't what made me fall in love with him. But what I'm laughing about to myself right now is I always kind of give okally a hard time because whenever I give him a compliment, his reaction or his response is to give the compliment like back to me. So should we demonstrate? Okay, maybe look so handsome to day, you look very handsome too. Thank you. See, that's what I can in return. Or if I'm like, maybe I just love you so much, I love you too. I love you so much. So usually saved back. Well, now it's kind of become a joke because you've given me so much crap about it, I know. But so it made me think of it when I was when I when I was thinking how I didn't tell you what made me fall in love with you, like I should have. You Fall in love with me. No, that did not make me fall in love with you.
What made me fall in love with Oakley? Well, his good looks, we're what initially piqued my interest, but then he is the easiest person to talk to, seriously, like the easiest person talked. So I think that that's why originally we were like such good friends, just because I loved talking to you in general and then just seeing like he has this ability to like do really to like work really hard at things, but but still be able to have like time and energy for the things that he loves, which I think is like it's important to be working hard at those things, but it's also important to have the time to like replenish yourself, and I think that you're so good at that and I want that to be something that like my kids know how to do and stuff like that, and I just think that that's kind of your default, like you don't even think. You probably didn't even know that you did that, in my opinion, and I just think that that's so great. Yeah, and you are so like supportive and you just you're I think you're always like trying your best, no matter what it is. Thanks. You're welcome. So that's what made me fall in love with you. So in love right now, because we're so in love. Okay, I feel like I'm giggling like a little middle school girl. Okay, okay, so back to the questions. There are a couple more. These are mostly geared towards like you're you and think happy.
Okay, so first one what do you like the most about? Think happy. What do I like the most about? Think happy? Um, well, I like that it's yours. You created this whole thing out of an idea that you had just to twoish years ago or something like that, right in the middle of Covid yeah, you had an idea and you went for it. Yeah, I think that's a beautiful thing, I think. And now you're here with multiple aspects of a growing business and specifically, you know, recording this podcast. I think that's amazing. Thanks, Babe. You're welcome. I couldn't have done it without your support. M Hmm, I think you still could have done it. It helped a lot. I did my part. Yes, okay, I'm curious the answer to the next two of these. What's it like to be a partner to an entrepreneurial entrepreneurs and what does balance look like? You know what comes to mind? What? Work? Work, work, work, work, work, work. So Kaitlin works a lot. He has a I don't know what's the word I'm looking for. You have a capacity to just work and work and work and work and work and working. I definitely don't share that with her. I got like, as Caitlin said, I gotta have my downtime. I gotta, you know, go play Golf, for watch a movie or whatever it is I do. So working with you or living with you under when you're constantly working. That's I try to help you to not work away from you, which I really appreciate. I mean, that's a really tough question to answer I definitely feel like I have to be patient with you because of sometimes how much you work, how much you work, but I mean, you're growing a business, so it makes sense. It's gonna help you help me with the balance, though. You really do. Yeah, and yeah, I do. I Love, Love, love working on think happy, but I also have goals of not spending quite as much time on it as I do right now. Um, and I think that that will partially come when I fully leave my nine to five, which will be in just at the time of this recording and six is weeks. But I think especially come the new year when, like, life kind of settles from James Being born and and we start getting into a new routine where I'm able to do think happy only, I'm really hoping that that helps cut back on the feelings like you know, like after Ellie's in bed, I pull my laptop back out and when Ellie's nopping on Saturdays and Sundays, I have my laptop out. I'm hoping to cut back on some of that. Yes, okay, so that's next one.
Is it hard to keep up with a wife who's basically super woman? Do you say so? I swear I did not put this question in myself. Kaitlin does so much in a beautiful way. How has that been for you as a husband? And somebody was really buttering you up. This is such a sweet question. It's definitely not always easy, but as far as our family organization goes, you always do such a great job with Ellie, Guppy, and I m going back to all you've done since we've been married. I think you can attest that I've spent a lot of time at different events for different groups and organizations that you've been a part of. You are the best at that. A lot of time meeting people I never would have met were it not for you, and I go back to that. You're so easy to talk to him. That's why everyone loves you at all those things. Maybe it's true a lot of Kaitlin is a part of a Business Marketing Association which is called something else. I don't know what now, but you had those marketing happy hours. Would go to network and people would come up to me and hey, so, what do you do? I'm so and so, I'm a marketer for and what do you do? I'm an engineer. I'm here. That's my life, my wife and then you started bringing some of your friends. Yeah, well, there was always free drinks and food. Um, there's a flip side to the organization I'm trying to I wrote some of this stuff down. Well, you're great at planning and keeping our calendar updated, which is a double edged sword sometimes. Yeah, I don't know if that's a compliment thing. I don't know if that's the right way to say that, but uh so. The dark side is Kaitlin and people around her tend to plan things out. I said this already or earlier. You plan things out weeks, sometimes months in advance. She almost always double checks with me, but my mind isn't able to put two and two together when it comes to multiple plans in one weekend. So frequently kate will ask me, Hey, do you so and so I want to do dinner three weeks from now. Yeah, yeah, that sounds awesome. Let's do it, but that leads to some stress bombs that go off on my part. So, but you've you've got a lot better at keeping our weekends open. Uh, yeah, actually weekends open for us. Well, now I plan downtime. Yeah, I planned times to not have plans. Yeah, and that is something that this community is well aware of, because, yeah, and usually when I talk about it, it is in reference to you also. That's definitely been helpful. Um, I love whoever put that question in. Thank you for saying my work is beautiful. I think, superwoman. That's so nice and so not deserved, but so so nice. Um, okay, I'll take the compliment. I'll take the compliment because, for whoever is listening to this, I would want them to take the compliment. Yeah, so taking the compliment for you guys. Okay, are you ready for some fun questions? You first of all have to guess the person who submitted this first question.
Okay, so would you rather take a bath with alligators or a bath with sharks? Who Do you think submitted that? Oh Lord, I have no idea. Okay, I'll give you an it a person who were both friends with who you always ask absurd questions like this and then when we give you an answer, you're like, oh, no, no, no, no, wait, but then actually, yes, question. It's actually a pretty good question. It's interesting. Uh. I mean, obviously I think I would rather neither of these for much of survival, but I would definitely choose sharks over alligators. So from what I understand about these animals, um alligators will attack prey that is much larger than them, whereas sharks tend to go for prey that is smaller. So, until you research this, maybe judgment. So alligators or sharks, unless you're in the water bleeding or injured or drowning or flailing, I think sharks. You have a better chance of surviving in a sea of sharks than plus. Alligators do that thing where they like spin around or flip around in the water with whatever they have in their mouth. I just think plus. I actually, before I even saw this question, I saw a story like this past week. This is a very gruesome some don't call us year old woman, and it's a terrible thing. Alligators in South Carolina killed somebody. Yeah, definitely sharks. So it's a good question. I like that. There was a lot of thought behind that one. Yeah, I'm excited. Okay, next question. Have you ever heard of a cooler name than Oakley? Man, I am fond of my name, but I think, I think our nephew Watson has maybe Watson, Watson James, Watson James. Yeah, I think Watson is a cooler name. Watson is an awesome name. Yeah, yeah, a very awesome name and he's an awesome little Kiddo. okay, now you have to guess who put in this next question. Who is the best mother in law in the world? Oh my Gosh, who could? Who? Do you think that one? I don't know. That's that's a tough one. I definitely have to go with my mother in laws for both answers. Yeah, for who submitted it, and then you already know that answer is the best. And Ellie. So Oakley calls my mom meets and then Ellie calls her Mamie, and now she recently started saying Mamie and it is like one of the cutest things in the whole wide world. When we get to my mom's house, when we pull up in the driveway, Ellie goes Mamie, Ellie also started announcing when she has a poopy diaper, poopoo. Like nine times out of ten it's right when you put her in the high chair. She looks at you with these really cute sad eyes and she goes poo poo and you're like, Dang it, Ellie, it's about to feed you and I can't let you sit here and eat your breakfast or your lunch with a poopy diaper. That's just cruel and it's always annoying timing. Okay, so this last and final question is one that I ask every guest who has come on this show, and so you are no exception.
Do you have a life or happiness hack that you use in your own life that you think the think happy community would find helpful in their own lives? I do, and it's actually interesting. You know, you gave me a good compliment that I make time for things that I like to do, and my sort of this was make time for things that you love doing. There you go. In my case, I like playing golf, like watching football, cooking, cooking, I like watching movies and shows, So I make time for those things whenever I can. Yep, that is definitely your time. To recharge. Yes, this has been so fun. Oh My gosh you end up having? Did you hate it or did you not hate it? Well, I'm definitely gonna NOT gonna tell everybody that I hated it. Yeah, so you better say it was awesome. It's awesome, freaking awesome fun. Well, now you can check being on a podcast off of your bucket list. I'm sure it was on there. Well, thank you for being here. You're welcome. I really appreciate it, and you're not allowed to ask me again. I won't ask you for fifty more episodes. Oh No, no, okay, you guys.
