EP 74: Three Unpopular Beliefs
Hello. Welcome back to another episode of the Think Happy podcast. I am your host, Caitlin Cuevas, and I'm so happy that you're here today. I am also so happy that the sun is shining here in Houston. I'm not sure if it will be on the day that this airs, but one thing that usually comes with this time of year in Houston is full-blown allergy season.
[00:01:08.690]
The amount of pollen that is on the ground is outrageous. It is just outrageous. And ever since I was a little kid, I have really suffered and struggled with allergies. But I have some good news for me, that is that I'm about to start getting allergy shots again. So when I was a kid, I used to get weekly allergy shots and they made a huge difference for me.
[00:01:39.870]
I stopped them as I got a little bit older, and then as I got even more older, I was about to start them again, but then I got pregnant with Eleanor. And the way the allergy shots work is when you start them, you build up to a maximum dosage. And then that maximum dosage is like what you stay at for the rest of the time that you're taking shots. And so when you're pregnant, if you're already at the maximum dosage, you're totally fine. But what you cannot do while you're pregnant is build up to that maximum dosage.
[00:02:19.520]
So, as you well know, I was pregnant with Eleanor, and then I had Eleanor. And then not too long after that, I was pregnant with James, and then I had James. And now Oakley and I have come to the conclusion well, we came to this conclusion quite a while ago, that we're a two and done family, right? We don't want the number of kids we have to outnumber us. With that being said, I'm going to get back on allergy shots, and I'm so excited I actually have to get retested later this week just to double triple check that I'm not allergic to dogs, which I am 99.9% sure that I am not.
[00:03:08.400]
But they just want to retest me for that before they make my little allergy shot cocktail. I don't know what they call it. It's probably most definitely not that. But anyway, because I'm getting retested later this week, I haven't been able to take any of my allergy medicines for the past couple of days. And so, yeah, this retesting cannot come soon enough.
[00:03:36.380]
I can't wait to get some allegra back up in here. Okay, so let's talk about this episode. I got the idea for today's episode while I was listening to another podcast who did a very similar episode where the host shared some of her unpopular beliefs. I loved that episode. I thought it was so fun.
[00:04:00.970]
In fact, I thought it was so fun that one night in the middle of the night, while I was thinking about not sleeping, while I was thinking about what today's episode should be about, I was like, oh my gosh, I should do an unpopular beliefs episode. And so here I am today, about to share some of my unpopular beliefs with you. How fun is that? It's really fun. But before I reveal my three unpopular beliefs because I know that you are dying to hear them, let me first tell you that the waitlist for joining the next round of Becoming Your Best You is open.
[00:04:40.040]
Op e n open. But here's the deal it won't be open for much longer. Okay? So the ladies who are in this current round of Becoming Your Best You have made such beautiful strides. I am so proud of them.
[00:04:57.900]

[00:07:37.810]
Waitlist you guys get your booties into becoming your best you. This next round starts on April 3. Okay. April 3. So now it is time for me to tell you my three unpopular beliefs.
[00:07:55.990]
Drum roll. Okay, first up, unpopular belief number one. It is not cool to be going nonstop, to be exhausted, and to feel overwhelmed. No, not only is it not cool, but it's also not sustainable. I do not know why we have found ourselves in this place where I feel like we almost brag about being on empty.
[00:08:23.430]
Why? I have no idea why, but I don't like it. Not only do I see it on social media literally every single time I open it up, I've also started to notice that talking about being busy or go go going is kind of the new default answer to when someone asks you how you're doing. It's kind of like a conversation starter or an icebreaker. And I mean, to be completely honest, I do this, too, where it's a habit that we're all in.
[00:08:55.290]
And you see, when you start talking about it, the other person starts talking about it, too. And then we just start to foster this braggy conversation of how little energy we have and how little time we have for ourselves and how we're just getting closer and closer to burnout. I think we need to flip this narrative. I think that we need to push back against this new norm in society. And here's the deal.
[00:09:22.880]
I don't think it's going to be hard, but I know that it's going to take intention, right? I don't think it's hard, but it's going to take intention, because it's now our new norm. We've gotten so used to it, right? I mean, let me tell you how simple it can be. So now that I have started to pick up on this trend, and now that I have started to notice this habit that I myself have today I went to lunch with a girlfriend, and I was thinking about this, right?
[00:09:57.310]
And so when we sat down at the table, we started chatting. The first thing I did was tell her how good my day had been so far. Think about that. I told her how good my day had been so far. I told her how Eleanor woke up in a good mood, how Eleanor didn't pitch a fit when she had to eat breakfast, and how she was good in the car on the way to school, and how I had time to get dressed and put some makeup on alone without my kids around me.
[00:10:29.140]
And I told her how I had such a good call with one of my private clients, and I just told her how good my day had been so far. And do you want to know what she did when I finished telling her how good my day was? She told me, you know, my kids were pretty good for drop off this morning, too. And it just started such a great conversation on such a great note. It's not tough.
[00:10:54.670]
It just takes intention. So unpopular belief number one is it is not cool to be going nonstop. It is not cool to be exhausted. It is not cool to feel overwhelmed.
[00:11:10.310]
As I'm sitting here, I'm drinking the most delicious cup of Kirbeans coffee. Kirbeans is a wife and husband duo who turn their passion for coffee into a business. They're so sweet, and it makes me so happy seeing their business thrive. Now, let me tell you why Kirbeans is thriving. To put it simply, it's because their coffee is amazing.
[00:11:31.950]
Think happy has had the honor of getting to pick a think Happy signature roast. These dark roasted Mexico beans smell like a good day waiting to happen. When brewed, they create the smoothest cup of coffee you've ever tasted, and it's even still good after being reheated. If you're like me and frequently get pulled away from your coffee, you know that's important. And I have a special treat for you.
[00:11:58.280]
ThinkHappy. Listeners receive 15% off their order of curbings head to Kirbeans coffee. Thinkappy. Kirbeans is spelled kirbeans and use code thinkappy at checkout for your 15% discount. Again.
[00:12:16.430]
That's Kirbeans coffee. code: thinkhappy.
[00:12:25.710]
Now, unpopular belief number two, hard work and putting in the time and energy is okay, and more people do it than you think. So whether you're working on yourself physically, whether you're working on yourself mentally, whether you're working on building a business or hitting a goal, putting in the blood, sweat, and tears is A OK. Sometimes I feel like we start to idolize people who we know peripherally or who we follow on social media, and we think that they were overnight successes, that they just woke up one day with this awesome end result. Can I just tell you right now, they were not overnight successes. We want quick fixes.
[00:13:17.750]
We want instant results and instant gratification. We want to be 20 pounds lighter and a million dollars richer like yesterday. Do you know what I have to say about this? I have to say one, those are great goals to have, but I also have to say two. You've got to be ready to roll up your sleeves and get to work.
[00:13:39.750]
And here's the thing. So imagine if you had been given a magic pill that would make you lose 20 pounds just overnight. Would you be waking up the next morning just so happy? Heck yeah, you would. You'd probably run around your house like a crazy person jumping up and down for joy.
[00:13:59.650]
But would you keep off the 20 pounds? I don't know. I really don't know. I can't answer that question. Now imagine that you set a goal and created sustainable adjustments to your habits.
[00:14:13.580]
That all led to you losing 20 pounds inside of four months. Now that takes effort. That takes dedication. That takes highs and lows and lots of lessons learned along the way. So now instead of overnight losing the weight you lose it over four months.
[00:14:34.540]
Are you still happy? Heck yeah you are. And along with being happy you feel proud of yourself and accomplished. You have proved to yourself that you can do tough things. You put in the time and the energy into bettering yourself and that tastes oh so sweet.
[00:14:56.280]
Now are you going to keep up the 20 pounds? I still don't know. I can't answer that question but I can bet that it's more likely you will. And the same thing goes for any other goal that you're working on. It is okay.
[00:15:13.320]
I even encourage you to put in the time and energy. There is nothing wrong with hard work. Those overnight successes that you see most likely weren't actually overnight successes. I would bet that one of a few things is probably happening. Either one you have created a story in your head that they're an overnight success.
[00:15:39.630]
Two, maybe they're not being completely upfront about their journey or three, maybe it's a combination of both. But my guess is they have put in a lot of work behind the scenes or for a lot of years before they were even on your radar. I said it. I said it. I sure did.
[00:16:01.430]
So unpopular belief two was hard work and putting in the time and energy is okay and more people do it than you think. Now last but not least unpopular belief number three. Grocery shopping can be self care. Grocery shopping can be self care. This one makes me laugh and if you've lost me here with this one just hear me out.
[00:16:31.630]
Okay? I truly believe that anything you actually enjoy doing can be self care. So with that being said, if you truly love going to the grocery store and if you have the opportunity to go alone and to have time to browse and wander through the aisles then more power to you. For real. I really truly mean that.
[00:16:54.870]
If that fills your cup, do it. I really do not think that it's right to put parameters around what self care is and isn't okay. Self care is so unique to each individual person. Right? I mean the word self is in the word.
[00:17:15.240]
It is how to care for yourself that is such a unique thing. So for me personally going to the grocery store is not self care. No, it's not my favorite errand to run but for some people it is and that's okay. For me self care is exercising. I love it.
[00:17:39.040]
I do it multiple times per week. And when I'm in a low spot, I find ways to incorporate even more movement into my days. But for you or for someone else, well, you might hate exercising. It could be the furthest thing from self care for you, and that's okay also. That is so okay also.
[00:18:02.410]
So let's recap. Today we have talked about three unpopular beliefs that I have. Unpopular belief number one, it is not cool to be going nonstop, to be exhausted, and to feel overwhelmed. Unpopular belief number two, hard work and putting in the time and energy is okay, and more people do it than you think. Unpopular belief number three, grocery shopping can be self care.
[00:18:36.870]
